Digital Skills Aren't Just for "Tech Jobs" Anymore

A plumber who can't submit a digital invoice, a healthcare aide who can't navigate an electronic records system, a hospitality worker who can't use a booking platform — none of these are tech roles, yet all now require baseline digital competency to function. Vocational training that ignores this is preparing people for a job market that no longer exists.

What Belongs in Every Program

At minimum: basic digital communication (professional email, messaging etiquette), comfort with the specific software tools common in that trade, and fundamental data-handling awareness — knowing what information is sensitive and how to handle it responsibly.

Why This Is Often Skipped

Curriculum designers often treat digital skills as someone else's job to teach — assumed knowledge rather than an explicit competency. Without an external standard requiring it, it's easy for a program to quietly omit it entirely.
